latest update 20/04/2008

NIMSA was formed in the mid '70's to promote pure soaring disciplines in Northern Ireland. Since then technology has moved on, and the club now also promotes electric soaring models, where a small electric motor is used to gain height before being switched off and soaring flight begins. NIMSA is affiliated to the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) and members are required to join BMFA. This is mainly for insurance purposes. NIMSA is open to new members, but in line with current BMFA guidelines, under 18's must be accompanied by a responsible adult, (either a parent or other responsible adult with written authorisation from the parents)

Currently, we have 19 senior members and 1 junior

NIMSA flies thermal events at the City of Belfast Playing Fields, Mallusk. We hire this facility from the council and fly there with their permission. No other flying of any kind should take place there other than at NIMSA events

Slope soaring takes place throughout N. Ireland

For details of how to join NIMSA, contact one of the committee members on the contacts page

Wed Night Flying

For next season (2008), the committee has decided to fully implement a decision taken at the 2006 AGM regarding Wed night flying. Thermal soaring, either electric or off the winch, will take precedence over all other forms of flight. No electric sport flying of park fliers etc will take place until thermal soaring has finished. This is in accordance with the clubs stated aims of "soaring" and the decision from the AGM

I've just been advised that the Retroplane event for Vintage Gliders will take place in the Republic of Ireland from the 12th to 27th July 2009. I know this seems along time away but BUILDING a scale vintage model takes time and this event has a "builder of the model" rule. Full information on types of model allowed, accommodation and photos of previous events can be found by clicking on the above logo, which will take you to the Retroplane website. There was an article on the 2007 event in the September issue of QEFI

NIMSA Cloth Badges

I can get printed cloth badges with the club logo for £1.20 each. There are 2 sizes 80mm & 100mm. If you click on the badge above you can see a larger image. If anyone is interested, can you drop me an e-mail with number you want and I will order them. I will probably wait until the end of July before ordering. Club Members only please
